Enjo-kosai, which translates, literally into English means ‘compensated dating’. It is a relatively new phenomenon in Japan where a certain social class of school aged Japanese girls date older men in exchange for money. It probably could be translated as student prostitution in Singapore. In recent years, enjo-kosai has become a problem among the young in Japan. In 1999, 4,475 underage girls were held in protective custody for deviant sexual behaviour. These girls were mainly junior high and senior high school students. Source? One of the main outlets for enjo-kosai is the telephone clubs. These clubs solicit women by advertising in magazines, newspapers and even on subway trains. Often phone booths near train stations are plastered with phone numbers and photos of young schoolgirls. Male clients of the telephone clubs have to pay money to enter the booth in the club and wait for private calls from the girls who will dial from outside the club. They will then fix a date, venue to meet and agree on the price for the sex act. In the show Onizuka went into one of the booth in the telephone club, which was filled with obsence photos, where he picked up a call. (which episode? Source?) Sometimes this form of dating includes sexual intercourse. Sometimes it does not, which was what happen to the girls in the show. These telephone outlets – major promoters of ‘sex for money’ actually aid the teen prostitutes with finding customers and also aggressively lure new young girls into prostitution.
