Focus Question (Sept 24)
During the twentieth century, numerous Chinese and Japanese had immigrated to British Columbia. However, they faced with different regulations upon entry to this province. The main difference was that Chinese immigrants had to pay Head Tax while the Japanese had to follow the Gentlemenˇ¦s Agreement. There are many major causes for such differentiation. To begin with, one considerable reason was that Japan at that time had an alliance with the British whereas China did not. Canada, regarded as part of the British was also affected by this event. After the Anglo-Japanese Alliance made during 1902, significant numbers of Japanese had started to immigrate to British Columbia. In July, 2003 alone, there were already over 2,300 Japanese that arrived in Canada.
