Without prior knowledge of an artist’s intent, can we truly enjoy a work of art? Must we put on blinders to see the female form without gritting our teeth and assuming that the artist was a misogynist bent on destroying the world? ... Do we read into every piece we see, or has the art world, media, and modern culture been leading us like sheep into misogyny?
The female form is beautiful, and there is nothing wrong with enjoying it. Centuries of paintings, drawings, sculpture, and now photographs laud the female form in varied ways. Blatantly violent and pornographic pieces aside, I believe the female form is mostly treated with respect. When looking for something to represent beauty, mountains, rivers, and flowers are often shunned in favor of the female form. Many believe that the use of female form in this way is belittling, but I see it as empowering. ... European art does seem to have a strong history of violence, specifically towards women. The fact is, European history is built on violence, though not necessarily toward women – so why the slant in the art world? Was the female form used so often because it was reviled or revered? ... She seems to be portraying the female perspective of the male’s ideal: the big breasted bimbo. ... I believe that the female form is used so often in art – particularly advertising for men – because it is easy to symbolize, easy to parallel, and easy to sell.
