Book Talk As a way of sharing books and of practicing speaking and listening skills, each of you will give a three-minute book talk. Book talks are an informal, yet structured way to share the novel you have chosen. Here’s house to give you book talk: _____ Take a chair at the head of the room _____ Show us your novel _____Tell us its title, its author, its genre Sacred Shadows Maxine Rose Schurr Novel- Realistic Fiction _____ Give a brief summary of the book Maxine Schurr tells of a young girl named Lena Katz. It starts out in Germany, 1917. At the age of five, Lena’s father is killed in the war, and he had received a medal for bravery. An important fact that you should know is that the Katz family is Jewish, because they go through World War I, and the beginning of Hitler coming to power. Her family was barely surviving because of a food shortage from the war. After dealing with the father’s death, in 1919, Lena wakes up in Poland, for the peace treaty has made the east side of Germany turn back into Poland. Gunther, her brother, moves to Germany with her Tante (means Aunt in German) Ilse, because Germans were not excepted by the Polish and neither were Jews. To forget about her troubles, and since her thirteenth birthday was coming soon, she had a party. At the party her few German friends, wanted to play “Truth Circle”, where you get in a circle and tell the person in the middle a flaw or talent they have. This game is important to the story because it reflects on all the painful thoughts on her looks that she has in the future. Well in the circle, Birgit tells her that she draws beautifully and that she should be a fashion designer. Next, Thea tells her that she is a nice person, then when it was Dora’s turn, she said, “Lena, you’re my best friend, so I probably know you even better than anyone else, and I love you like a sister, for you’re kind and smart and clever. And that’s the way you will attract a boy, for I must tell you, Lena, you are plain”.
