Shakespeare paper 20100144 Kim Jee-hye We can classify Shakespeare’s whole work into four types. Comedy, history, tragedy, and tragicomedy these are that of his works and some times romance takes part in his play as a genre per se`. Let’s define comedy and tragedy since they seem quite different from each other. Comedy could be simply defined as a dramatic presentation which makes us laugh. However laughter may be evoked in tragic circumstances also. Then how can we define comedy correctly? Literary and cultural critics tend to regard something as a comedy not so much because it makes us laugh but because a certain set of conventions is being followed. What’s the set of conventions? Before discuss this, move to the first assignment and let’s define tragedy. It is not simply a play that has a sad, miserable ending. Tragedy, like comedy, has the set of conventions which confirm the identity of tragedy. On the basis of what we have read this semester we can find common elements concerning to a genre. Cymbeline and the winter’s tale, they are both belongs to comedy. And they have in common in that their preoccupation with the journey of young woman from the state of virginity to that of marriage. And these two books trace the passage of young people out of their parent’s control and into marriage. There must be some hardships like martial romantic misunderstanding, intricate situations, complicated adventure and disguising themselves (usually young women cross-dressed as men), etc. But no matter what happened before the ending is always happy. The family is reunited and lovers can be together again and marry. They really have an interesting pattern creating an atmosphere of love, joy, happiness, and forgiveness. Thus there’s no absolute villain since they repent their evil deed and are melted together with the good-doers. It seems like, in comedy, the Situation itself is more important than characters. For those who had once conceived evil thought never remain as they are through the whole play and rather change their mind and thoughts by the help of the situations. And indeed complicated situation thrills us a great deal blocking our keen observation on characters. We can probably find these elements in almost all comedy that Shakespeare wrote. We discussed that the tragedy is not mere a sad ending but has the set of conventions. The conventions of tragedy can be referred as these below: they have a single heroic main character (the protagonist); conspiracy; a fierce fighting; madness; dreadful dilemma; wrong decision; many deaths at the end.
