GLOBAL TELEVISION CULTURES COUNTRY-PORTUGAL Portugal is one of the oldest countries in the world, and until the beginning of the 1990s, the portuguese could only enjoy the public television channels RTP Canal 1 and RTP2. Nowadays, the country has access to international channels, brought about by national television licenses in 1992, and the introduction of cable television in 1994. With the introduction of global television and international broadcasting, brought about many issues for the portuguese society, and issues facing the country’s television industry. Such issues included things as the impact of technology and the introduction of interactive TV, the popularity of “reality shows’ and the impact that they have on portuguese society, the new broadcasting laws and their impact on the television industry, and the impact that international television channels and broadcasting have on the portuguese people. Perhaps the most influential issues that is facing the portuguese society in the television industry is the impact of technology and what it means for the future in Portugal. ... It is basically an information site offering a press release on how microsoft is introducing IDTV into Portugal. Probably the most fundamental element to this press release would be the use of an ordinary Portuguese worker, and his comments on his recent trial of this new technological advance in television. ... Basically IDTV is a new television service that offers more control to the viewers when they are watching television. ... it is a huge step up for technology in this country, who’s main television diet consists of football and soap operas. IDTV will give them a greater access to world-wide resources and television channels and broadcastings. ... it will allow them to decide and choose at what different angles they want to watch their sporting programs on, and it is more proactive than regular television. ... Issues need to be raised here, such as things like, will children have as much control over the television as adults and can any restrictions be put on to prevent children from watching television shows that may be misleading to them? This web site was set out in journal-like form, and provided not only information on interactive television, but also shared views on the history of Portuguese television, statistics on viewing in Portuguese society, and it characterised the Portuguese viewers. Probably the most important aspect to this web site, and what set it aside from the one previously mentioned, was the fact that it shared the views of other intellectuals, and how they perceived interactive television in the Portuguese market. Firstly, it offered data about the Portuguese television industry, and gave the history of how television has emerged in Portugal. It then gave relevant information on how Microsoft was to incorporate with TV Cabo to provide and trial interactive tv for six months in Portugal. |
