Until recently the most dominant form of graffiti has been the traditional wall writing one might see the public rest rooms or scrawled across the walls, billboards, and signposts of large cities: “curve virginity!” “Imperials rule,” “Here I sit broken-hearted ‘’ Written graffiti has not declined, but today it shares space with a gaudy new version of itself: spray-can art. Graffiti artists, known as “writers” on the street, now cover whole sides of buildings, sidewalks, or subways and train cars nightly with their gaudy work. Such writes cause literally millions of dollars of damage every year to create what many of them insist is art and most of the public view as outright vandalism, such graffiti is not going to disappear soon, if at all.
