Good and bad relations between police and the community

The relationship between any community and its police force is difficult to interpret as it is always changing and is certainly not clear cut. There are both some good and bad relations between ‘cops’ and their communities and there are many reasons for these relations. As in any relationship there are two sides, the community’s attitude towards the police and the other side, the police’s attitude towards its community. While the police continue to serve and protect questions are raised by the community with regards to fairness and truthfulness. And while the community is predominantly made up of law-abiding citizens, radicalists and the constant attacks of police morals by the community has the police force asking – “where is the respect and appreciation of our work?”
Two differing views by two well respected authors of books on crime and policing leads this essay into the confusion of establishing some reasons for both good and bad relations between police and their communities. “Police work by its very nature makes harmonious relations with all citizens difficult, if not impossible” this quote highlights the idea that relations between the police and the community are primarily negative. This essay will discuss four main reasons for these bad relations. ... Secondly, the dramatic world of police secrecy and corruption and the problems associated with this. Thirdly, the over policing of specific minority groups in the community such as young people, Aborigines and so on. The final reason for bad relations is the concept of police conservatism which leads to inconsistency amongst other problems. It is accepted that there are also some good relations between police and their communities. “Our current knowledge about the police provides a basis for the celebration of good policing and its continuous betterment through theoretically based research and education” This essay will focus on three reasons for good relations; they are firstly the ease of access to police. Secondly, the high level of interaction between the police and the community aimed to educate a greater number of community members and finally, the police efforts to constantly improve their services is looked upon very favorably by the public. ... Be it that there are so many laws, criminals and citizens to protect “police can in some situations experience confusion regarding their appropriate role… this uncertainty often results in conflict at the operational level.” Because the public expect a certain amount of consistency and certainty from the police and often, due to discretion it doesn’t occur, the public may find it hard to see the police force as fulfilling their duty.
