Avant-garde is defined as a work that pushes the known boundaries of acceptable art sometimes with revolutionary, cultural, or political implications. Our recent visit to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Sydney really opened my eyes to what art is capable of. Art is consistently changing, both in style and definition. Art cannot be defined as a single object. Art is all around us, art is ideas, art can be nothing if that’s what art wants. It is consistently pushing boundaries, or edges of society and imagination. Many artists that featured at the MCA can be seen as avant-garde. Ugo Rondinone, Lucio Fontana, Janet Laurence and Marcel Duchamp are some artists that produce avant-garde artworks just to name a few.
Lucio Fontana takes the concept of conventional art and tips it on its ear in his work ‘Spatial Concept’ from 1949. ... It seems that art no longer has boundaries. While styles of art are particular to certain times and places, revolutionaries will always exist and prosper in the art world.
