Image Analysis The Artists Camp by Tom Roberts

Tom Roberts
The Artists Camp 1886
Oil on canvas

The Artists Camp was painted by Tom Roberts in 1886. When Roberts returned from his Art studies in Europe to Melbourne in 1885 he set his first painting camp near Box Hill with Frederick McCubbin and Louis Abrahams. Roberts had met the two artists when they were students at the National Gallery School. While Roberts was in Europe he gained an appreciation for painting en plein air, a method of painting outdoors and shared this interest with McCubbin and Abrahams. Painting en plein air allowed artists to develop a close familiarity with nature and capture natural light in the landscape in its truest form.
