Most people you talk to know the general story of the last few days of Christ but most think of it in a historical context and don’t relate it to today. Superstar puts the story in a more modern setting to get people to see that the story stays relevant to today. ... Superstar presents it’s contemporary theme so well that it often overwhelms you and gives you something to think about later. ... Wall writes,
Superstar…accomplishes something I have never before seen in a biblical film-it portrays Jesus in a first century setting with a 20th century sensitivity. ...
Wall also later goes on to say, “Superstar sings it’s message in a contemporary idiom; the familiar characters have been deliberately cast in unexpected guises to reveal new insights into the Gospels” (693).
Jay Robert Nash’s review of the filming in The Motion Picture Guide didn’t seem to agree with others about the filming stating, “Lots of gorgeous visual images but no motivation at all is given for much of it. ... ” (44)
Most critics were already familiar with the music to Jesus Christ Superstar either from the rock opera itself or the soundtrack and what made this movie different was that the songs were actually the dialogue.
