Knitting is one of the oldest forms of needle arts. The original knitters were men and members of guilds. As time passed women became more and more involved. About 1400 ad a crafty invented the knitting frame which saved much time. The frame still exists in the form of a knitting machine. These are expensive devises which save so much time that a person can knit a sweater that would take weeks by hand in onThere are some very basic abbreviations that knitters use: k = knit p = purl st = stitch sts = stitches BO = bind off (sometimes called "cast off") CO = cast on MC = main color CC = contrasting color m1 = make 1 (a way of increasing 1 st) k2tog = knit 2 together sl= slip psso = pass slip stitch over (used in combination with slip 1, knit 1 to decrease 1 stitch).
