What exactly was Michelangelo trying to say with the details of the Medici Tombs in the Medici Chapel? Michelangelo was trying to express the passing of time and the inevitability of death that every human -- regardless of their status -- must endure.
Death was not far from Michelangelo’s mind at the time that he worked on the Medici Tombs. ... It is even suggested that during the time that Michelangelo was working on the Medici Tombs he was falling deeper and deeper into depression (2). These events in Michelangelo’s life would be very influential and most-likely would affect his art and his mindset when designing architecture such as the Medici Tombs.
The tomb of Giuliano de Medici consists of two figures which are seated on his sarcophagus and closed within themselves: one statue being a man and the other being a woman. These figures, which were named Night and Day by Michelangelo (3), are detailed with symbols that further emphasize Michelangelo’s fixation on death and its influence on his art. ...
The sculpture of the man is very muscular, yet his posture and Michelangelo’s positioning of his body suggest a sense of tension and power (1). ... However, the sculpture of the man has no eyes and there is a lot of speculation as to whether this is due to the statue being unfinished or if it is Michelangelo’s way of expressing the fact that no man, however strong, can escape death (3).
