Government action and policies have always been the center of controversy among our nation, and civil rights have always been a major issue. ... This policy is known as Affirmative Action, in which institutions set goals and timetables for increased diversity, and then use recruitment, set-asides and preference as ways of achieving these goals. Affirmative Action has resulted in unqualified candidates being given preference over qualified candidates, and it has created "reverse discrimination." In addition, the roots of Affirmative Action are dated and no longer apply in todays society. It is for all these reasons that Affirmative Action should be outlawed. ... University quotas have been a cause of much of this action as well as institutions attempt to make a diversified class in order to prove that there is no discrimination. It is this attempt to prove a lack of prejudice that leads to the next problem with Affirmative Action, the "reverse discrimination. ... " Affirmative Action was developed to reduce bias and to give equal opportunity to those of all races. However, with the implementation of this policy (Affirmative Action), minorities are now being given greater opportunities than those of the majority. ... Affirmative Action has proved to be counterproductive and it has reversed the problem that it intended to correct.
