1st enduring Eng. settlement in New World-Jamestown, Virginia in 1607. -Eng. knew of New World’s existence and intrigued by its possibilities. -Spain dominant force in Amer. and seemed the dominant naval force in Europe. The Spanish Armada: Eng. built up confidence to challenge Spanish Armada. -Philip II, powerful Spanish king assembled one of the largest military fleets in history of warfare to end Eng. challenges to Spanish supremacy. -Pioneers of Eng. colonization were Sir Humphrey Gilbert and his half-brother Sir Walter Raleigh. -Gilbert led expedition in 1583 to Newfoundland, take possession of it in Queen’s name. Roanoke Gilbert’s ship sank when encountered a storm exploring for a military post on the southward cost. This inspired Raleigh to set up expedition to explore the North American coast. Returned with 2 Indians and reports of what they have seen. -Raleigh enthusiastic about the island of Roanoke and the area beyond it, “Virginia” which he later asked to name in honor of Queen Elizabeth, “the Virgin Queen.” -1585 Raleigh recruited his cousin, Sir Richard Grenville, to lead a group of men to Roanoke to establish a colony.
