Social Change and its effect on Spanish American Literature Spanish American Literature and its effect on

Social Change and its effect on Spanish American Literature; Spanish American Literature and its effect on Society.

In the late 1800’s, Spanish America was lagging far behind North America and Europe in terms of modernization and industrialization. Just before the turn of the century, however, European and North American businessmen came to see that Spanish America was the ideal place to invest. Much of Spanish America was rich in natural resources, there were vast expanses of land and territory that had not yet been exploited, and perhaps most important in the eyes of potential investors: the Spanish American social structure still resembled colonialism; the rich, elite landowners happily took advantage of the uneducated and poor working lower class.
These investors from North America and Europe channeled money into Spanish America which resulted in rapid modernization, as well as development of railways and other transportation systems and created industries for logging, mining, and the production of other raw materials.
This sudden modernization obviously resulted in a great deal of change. Literary critic, Cathy Jrade says that these changes “… not only radically altered the traditional, feudal-like social arrangements that had characterized Spanish America for centuries but also laid the foundation for life and thought in the twentieth century.
