The Ethics of Paul Cronan and New England Telephone Company Ethical and Legal Environment of Business MBA C601 Abstract The Paul Cronan case has several important legal and ethical issues. It is apparent Paul Cronan is a man suffering from AIDS. His privacy rights were threatened which created physical threats. Paul’s illness threatened many co-workers. Was it the fear of them getting AIDS or working with someone who does have AIDS. The Legal Case Analysis: Paul ask for time off to go to a doctors appointment and was told by his supervisor that he would have to tell his supervisor named, Charles O’Brian the nature of his sickness. Paul made Charles promise that he would not let his illness go any further. Charles endured Paul it would go not further. In court O’Brian acknowledged he told three other supervisors and his supervisor about Paul. Charles informed Paul he should go to the company doctor so they can determine if his missing work would be satisfactory to the company. This was a policy of the company. Paul did go see the company’s doctor as his supervisor recommended. After that visit a co-worker called Paul to inform him word about his illness spread among his company. On June 21, 1985 Paul’s doctor sent a note to the company that Paul was disabled and would be out of work three months. Paul had worked for twelve years for the New England Telephone Company starting in 1973 before he had to start taking time off for AIDS. The company had a policy that between 5 and 15 years of service Paul could receive 13 weeks full pay and then 39 weeks half pay after that.
