Cotton Subsidies
The problem in Burkina Faso is the United States government is paying American farmers four billion dollars to grow cotton that is worth less than that and then releasing it to the rest of the world. The United States releases so much cotton onto the world market that it has driven down world prices. This has caused Burkina Faso’s cotton industry which is one of the lowest-cost producing countries about a dime more than the prevailing global price to get a kilo of cotton to the world markets.
