... The business environment thus consisted of two different sets of professionals with distinct cultures and limited exposure of one another. ... Being part of the HR department, my primary responsibility was to bring about an attitudinal and cultural change among the Indian and British employees. The task involved educating both of them on how to work in the new business environment, and assisting them to do things the right way.
While going through the task of bridging this cultural gap, we found that British expatriates were too open in their approach. ... We initiated a series of discussions with the expatriates, and tried to explain the existing culture of the organization, the business and work culture in which Indians have been trained, and their behavioral attributes and related matters. ... The importance of adapting to a new business environment was also put across to them. ... While undertaking this responsibility, I realized how important it was for employees to realize that while accommodating the diversity which surrounds their professional background, they were also learning about a different business culture. If the employees show willingness to accept the inevitable cultural gap, which bridge them apart and learn about new cultural environment, they can adapt and perform well even in the most complex of such business environments.
