Corporate Overview American Airlines is one of the largest air carriers in the world. It operates in many different countries and, in addition to flying the flagship American Airlines brand, it also flies American Eagle as well as operates TWA (Trans World Airlines) as of the beginning of 2001. The company was founded by the coming together of many different small carriers, including the company that employed aviation pioneer Charles Lindbergh ("Company History," 2001). Over the course of its history, American has grown through strategic acquisitions, and has helped change the commercial aviation industry. American Airlines helped pioneer automated reservations through its SABRE system, and has been a significant participant in the move to a hub-spoke operation since airline deregulation in the late 1970s. The 1980s saw a considerable amount of mergers and acquisitions in the aviation industry, but American Airlines has continued operations with the same brand name, acquiring TWA in 2001 and operating smaller commuter airlines (including American Eagle), as well.
