In Maya Angelou’s “Graduation,” students are “tracked”-- placed into different classes based on race, gender, ethnicity, or national origin. Tracking can ultimately determine the outcome of a student's entire academic career. In “Graduation,” the graduating class of the Lafayette County Training School receives a speech from an unwelcome surprise guest, Edward Donleavy. Mr. Donleavy delivers a speech detailing the jobs these students can look forward to based on their African race. He makes Angelou feel that "the white kids were going to have a chance to become Galileos and Madame Curies and Edisons and Gauguins, and our boys (the girls weren't even in on it) would try to be Jesse Owenses and Joe Louises." Student tracking of this extreme is absurd and should not be tolerated today. The two largest issues with student tracking are race and gender, but these two issues used to be more prevelant than they are today. But the fact is tracking by race and gender still take place. Racism, though it is still a problem, used to be a larger problem in the United States. The common occupation for African Americans before they were granted their freedom was slavery--cooking and cleaning indoors or working outside in the fields.
