The novel Animal Farm by George Orwell is based on the events of the Russian Revolution. The animals are inspired by a speech made by Old Major suggesting that they exterminate soon take leadership and use many effective methods to take over the farm and control the other animals. ... The leaders use this chant to keep the animals focused on the pigs and the success of the farm, causing them to overlook their own unhappiness. They have been so distracted and brainwashed, that they are incapable of noticing what’s happening to themselves and the farm. ... They become so cold, tired and hungry that they are eventually unable to observe the truth about what is really happening to the farm. ... From now on, any misfortunes that occur on the farm, are blamed on Snowball. ... In reality the farm really is failing and the windmill is just used as an image to make the outside world perceive that they are succeeding. Although the farm isn’t succeeding as well as it seems, the pigs are able to plan schemes to keep humans from hearing of their difficulties. Even though the progress on the farm isn’t as thriving as they hoped, Squealer continuously “would read out to them lists of figures providing that the production of every class of food-stuff had increased by two hundred per cent, three hundred per cent, or five hundred percent, as the case might be” (61).
