Achilles’ Reconciliations
Reconciliation is not merely a word meaning forgiveness, yet it is an action that must truly occur deep within one’s heart. ... Because reconciliation is an action, it should have an outcome which changes a person’s view on the dilemma. In certain ways Achilles’ reconciliation with both Agamemnon and Priam may seem to be just compromises, compared to the deep feelings involved with Achilles reconciling with his own fate; however, in all three of the settlements, Achilles gains a greater insight into understanding his place in his world. ... After he resolves his issues with Priam, he is able to see the whole picture of the world instead of only war, and after reconciliation with his fate, he is able to come to the realization that it is how he is seen in Zeus’s eyes that is truly important. ... The controversy between Agamemnon and Achilles begins because neither of the two wants to give up his prize, for fear of losing a sense of power among each other, even though it would be for the good of the Achaians. When Agamemnon requests Achilles’ prize of Briseis to take the place of his prize, Chryseis, Achilles reacts in rage and disappointment toward him. ... 149-51), Achilles conveyingly perceives that Agamemnon’s leadership is an empty pretense. ... 158-59), Achilles is attempting to get himself portrayed as the more noble leader. ...
Eventually Achilles goes back to fighting, but not until Patroclus is killed. ... At this point in the epic, one would say that Achilles and Agamemnon compromise; Agamemnon has Achilles fighting in the war, while Achilles is attempting to fulfill the despair in his heart.
