Achieving Paul s Goal


Paul writes in Philippians chapter three, beginning with verse seven:
7Yet whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of Christ. ... 12Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. ... 14I press on toward the goal for the prize of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus. ...
Paul tells early Christians in verse seven he gave up the advantages he previously had as a Jew because knowing Christ was greater. ... Christians seem to think following Christ’s way is less rewarding than the rewards of the world, but Paul writes in the next two verses (eight and nine) that “the gain of being ‘in Christ’ far outweighs the value of everything Paul once possessed. ... In verse nine, Paul begins to discuss the intentions of a Christ follower. ... As a Pharisee, Paul’s goal was flawlessly to follow the law of the Old Testament covenant and be found “blameless in the sight of God.” By becoming a follower of Christ’s teachings, he receives this “righteousness” by the faith that Christ had. ... Paul seems to be saying here that Christians should leave these selfish things behind and strictly follow Christ’s word.
Paul writes he wants to “know Christ. ... Christ’s resurrection is referred to in this verse, so for a Christian to know Christ, he must share the pain and struggles Christ endured during his lifetime. ... This verse is calling Christians to know and understand their purpose on earth, which picks up where Christ left off and continues toward his goal: bringing the lost to know His salvation.
