Alice Walker's Everyday Use

Dee or Wangero? In Alice Walker’s Everyday Use parts of the setting are used to explain the conflict. The conflict in Walker’s Everyday Use is internal. The eldest daughter, Dee, is torn between holding on to her past and letting go of it. Dee is nostalgic towards items in her home: the bench, butter churn and the quilts. Yet at the same time she’s anxious to leave her past behind. In the story Dee comes home from college to visit her mother. While there she asks to take a few things back with the intent to preserve her heritage. Dee wants to hold onto her past by keeping things that remind her of her heritage.
