Analysis of the poem
Christmas by John Betjeman. ...
John Betjeman was born in 1906, he was educated at Marlborough and Oxford and he soon developed a talent for writing poetry. ...
Betjeman’s poem ‘Christmas’ was written in, it is a very typical poem in the way it is laid out and towards the end it discusses one of his favourite themes within his writing, Religion. The subject of the poem is immediately known from its title, ‘Christmas’, it is a sweet quaint poem, using descriptive writing to make us think of the excitement usually connected to the Christmas period. ... I think he chose this rigid structure because it suggests tradition, which reflects the tradition that is Christmas.
From the very first line we know what the poem is about, ‘The bells of waiting Advent ring’ and we immediately think of Christmas because of Advent period mentioned leading up to it. The first stanza sets the scene as we can imagine the oil lamp creating a warm glow, contrasting to the ‘streaks of winter rain’ outside, this cosy feeling is something most of us relate to the height of winter during the Christmas holiday so this evokes a warm happy reaction for the reader.
