A Farewell to Arms - Frederick Douglas

CHARACTER SKETCH: FREDERIC HENRY Frederic Henry is an ambulance driver for the Italian army. In the beginning of the book, Henry knows nothing about him self and seems a shallow person. He is a typical war icon, he follows what everyone else does and has no personality of his own. He tells women he loves them, but really doesn’t. He even plays his little game with Catherine Bailey, after admitting to himself he didn’t know what love was. Henry grows as a person slowly through the book though. He does find out what love is, but still acts selfishly about it. He also starts to develop a personality and realizes he doesn’t even want to be in the war. Henry finally realizes that he does love Catherine and starts to pull his life together. He lives for her and only her and wants nothing but to be with her. This shows some progression of character that Henry makes, he is no longer shallow when it comes to whom he cares about. By the end of the book though, the reader must question if Henry is still a selfish man? When Catherine is put into the hospital and goes into labor with the child, Henry is a nervous wreck. Not once does he ask about the child, he only asks about Catherine. While this does show his love for her, one must question why he doesn’t care about the child? When the child is born, the first thing he says is “that the thing nearly killed his mother.” No words of love go to the child, I personally believe Henry reacts this way because he was afraid that Catherine might die and he would be left alone in a foreign country and in life.
