Activism through Art Lorraine Hansberry’s play, A Raisin in the Sun, is a very accurate portrayal of an African American family in the late 1950’s. ... Because of the time period in which this play was written, Hansberry can be looked at as an activist for civil rights through her writing. ... This is evident through his job as a chauffer for a white man. ... Beneatha is in college and she does indeed believe in making a difference through her liberal views. But, when it comes to her education, Beneatha is selfish and doesn’t take her family into consideration nor the sacrifices they make to put her through college. ... History reveals that black were not treated as equals in the 1950’s through the 1970’s and even beyond, and there are many historical accounts, which prove this to be true. ... This same tactic was used in Hansbery’s play through the character Lindner, and the white community’s scheme to keep the black family out of their neighborhood. ... The play shows the lack of confidence that blacks did have for themselves and, “If one has been conditioned to expect little, as many Blacks have been through racism, or to believe that Blacks deserve and are entitled to little, as some members of society have been led to believe, then the demand for any degree above this conditioned less will seem excessive” (112). ... “The play raises issues of racial interaction and justice, as well as gender roles, class, and the nature of the American dream” (8), Domina states, and we both agree that this was definitely an issue raising play, and with my thoughts added, it was a mean of activism, and an eye opener for those who were not aware or conscience of the racism that haunted blacks and their communities. |
