Chess

The literature chosen is a comical play called The Merchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare. The play’s publisher is Signet Classic and was copyrighted in 1963. Shakespeare was born in 1564 to a successful middle-class glove-maker in Stratford-Avon, England. In 1582 he married an older woman, Anne Hathaway, and they had three children. He became the most popular playwright in England, and part-owner of the Globe Theater. Shakespeare is well known for his plays; Romeo and Juliet, Julius Caesar, Taming of the Shrew, Much Ado About Nothing, Othello, and Hamlet. In 1616, Shakespeare died at the age of fifty-two. The play is not set in the year it was written. Instead, Shakespeare looks back in time to the beginning of the Renaissance. The play is set in Venice, a city in Italy, which was richer than many other countries around this Renaissance period. It had fallen from this glory by Shakespeare's lifetime. A second setting in the play is Belmont, Italy. The setting helps establish the dominant atmosphere of this play by showing; fabulous wealth, royal merchants, richly attired gentlemen, and refined culture. During this time, Italy was a very rich country, and Shakespeare shows this throughout the play.
