There are many people in society today that would agree that America is reaching a very high liberal status. ... Motion picture ratings have not escaped this curse, and with parents struggling to know what is and is not appropriate for their children, Hollywood continues to use its seemingly inexhaustible resources in an attempt to make more movies available to younger audiences. Movies and television programs today are often rated incorrectly causing children and younger teens to be more accustomed with violence, drugs, sex, and bad language.
Today’s children are exposed to much more graphic situations not only in movies but on day time television as well. ...
Popular movies of today are just as incorrectly rated as day time television shows. But exactly how are movies in today’s culture rated? The Motion Picture Association of America has the greatest influence in the rating that a movie receives. Although there are several smaller groups such as the Classification And Rating Association (CARA) that are working to have stricter ratings enforced on movies of today. Movies can generally be categorized into four ratings. ... Although there may be a few scenes that are on the borderline of what should not be in these movies, CARA assures that “nudity, sex, and drugs will be absent from the movie and violence will be minimal.” Although there have been movies that have obviously slipped through these ratings when they should not have. ... Another example of a movie that would appear to be suitable for children is the recently released movie, Shrek. As a parent, it would be extremely easy to pick up this movie thinking that it is a nice, funny cartoon. ... It is safe to say that the “potty humor” found in today’s children’s movies were non-existent during the 1950s and early 1960s. ... A PG movie may have material that may not be suitable for younger children. ...
During the late 60s, there were many movies that landed somewhere in between the G and PG ratings.
