... However, the approach taken by the two playwrights in portraying their characters to their audience are contrary. Brecht sustains that the audience is alienated from the characters of the play. Ibsen, on the other hand, tries to be objective as possible and exposes the deceptions and corruptions of middle-class society.
In Brechts attempt to keep the audience alienated from his characters and the play the methods of staging, the aspects of character, the use of songs and structure of the play are utilized. The methods of staging used by Brecht include the use of white light, banners to introduce every scene, the explicit scene changes and the minimal use of theatrical illusion. ... This innovative technique appears rather unusual to the audience. Drama performances of the day were usually followed with a narrator telling the story, however, Brecht broke away from this and used banners instead. This catches the attention of the audience making it harder for the audience to get caught up in the story, as opposed to a narrator, which would lead patrons into being emotional due to the variations in pitch and tone of voice. Scene changes are made in full view of the audience. This reminds the audience that they are watching a play. ... In contrast to Mother Courages previous scenes of struggling for success, scene 7 shows the height of her success. This immediate contrast has also served as a technique of keeping the audience alienated from the play. ... Devices such as music and drums played at the funeral of the Imperial Commander Tilly in the beginning of Scene 6 and the sound of canon fire at the end of Scene 6 to imply war leads the audience to being emotional. However, this is deceptive as it only serves as an improved representation of reality, but not enough to drag the audience away from the knowledge that they are in a theatre.
