Crime Fiction Comparative study

... Knowing the genre of a particular text is paramount to being able to enjoy and wholly appreciate it, and as active viewers of a text we will attempt to categorise a text into a particular genre, whether it be comedy, drama, or of course, crime fiction. ...
The Real Inspector Hound, written by Tom Stoppard is one such text where the author’s extensive experience in dealing with the crime fiction genre has enabled him to compose a literary piece which challenges its conventions. ...
The characters that Stoppard has created within his play are concrete examples of the painful stereotypes that often inhabit texts of the “Golden Age” crime fiction sub-genre. ...
Stoppard had his origins in the 1960s as a drama critic reviewing these sorts of plays, so it’s certainly no surprise that he then turned his hand to writing a play pointing out the shortcomings of crime fiction texts, and the genre they were born into. Stoppard has managed to produce a play which not only challenges the conventions of crime fiction, but which completely turns them on their head, through his use of dry humour and satire.
Reading texts which challenge these conventions however, can only truly be appreciated after having also viewed texts which conform to them, and reading these conformist texts is paramount to reaching an understanding of the crime fiction genre. ... The emphasis in The Big Sleep, as in many other conventional crime fiction texts, is on the central character of the film, that is, the sleuth hero. ... The fact that so many murders seem to go unsolved during the film is irrelevant to the viewer; the film’s mystery component keeps us guessing from the first gunshot to the time the end credits roll, and it is this sort of behaviour that we as an audience have come to expect from our crime fiction texts.
The 2002 film by Robert Altman entitled Gosford Park is another movie which confirms and supports the conventions of the genre; this is a movie belonging to the very sub-genre that Tom Stoppard was attempting to subvert through satire; that is, the Golden Age or “Cosy School” style of crime fiction.
