CRIME FICTION
WHAT IS A GENRE?
A genre is a way of categorising a particular media text according to its content and style. We base these categories on the accepted conventions and features of other texts of the same genre.
The main features of genre can include point of view, style of language, types of characters, setting, and plot. The ways in which these features are used and manipulated define to which genre or genres it can belong. ... The problem occurs when texts may follow one genre in content, but another in form.
So the bounds of a genre are not absolute. Texts often exhibit the conventions of more than one genre, which leads to further concepts like hybrid genres, and sub and super genres.
CONVENTIONS
As aforementioned, the conventions of a genre are the typical way language features are used, which provide a set of guidelines that composers and audiences follow. ... For example, when reading a crime fiction novel we would be suspicious of the characters, noting clues, and trying to figure out who-dunnit, whereas when reading a romance novel you would be noticing chemistry between characters and reading between the lines of their dialogue. ... The guidelines can also be challenged and thus another hybrid or sub genre can be created, therefore moving the genre in new directions.
CONVENTIONS OF CRIME FICTION
The essence of crime fiction is to examine the nature of the society in which the text is set. A crime, investigation, and subsequent solution is a perfect way to illustrate the values of that society. The crime can be seen to represent what is considered abhorrent to the values of the particular society, the investigation displays the pursuit of what is considered to be right and just, and the solution restores the normal amount of order. ...
Crime fiction is an especially broad genre, with numerous sub genres such as film noir, thriller, detective, parody, gangster, classic crime fiction, courtroom drama and golden age, to name a few. ... In today’s post modern world, where intertextuality plays a great part and moving away from traditional conventions is almost the norm, mystery is nearly the only convention by which we can judge whether a work is crime fiction or not.
SNOW FALLING ON CEDARS
As a piece of crime fiction, David Guterson’s novel Snow Falling On Cedars is concerned with the courtroom drama of the trial of Kabuo Miyamoto for the murder of fellow fisherman Carl Heine on the small island of San Piedro.
