Affirmative action was created to somehow “reverse” the effects that past discrimination had on American minorities. More specifically, affirmative action was intended to reverse past discrimination without infringing upon the rights of others. Because affirmative action is used to fill quotas in college admissions, it is essentially hurting the admission chances of non-minority applicants. Based upon this encroachment of equality, selection of students for university admissions should be based on merit rather than race. Merit is defined as a student’s overall performance on standardized tests, on community involvement, and on extra-curricular activities. Affirmative action is a form of reverse discrimination. “Reverse discrimination arises when the efforts to rectify past discrimination violate the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution” (Tucker 30).
