In Michel-Guillaume-Jean de Crèvecoeur’s 1782 Letters from an American Farmer, Crèvocoeur further displays his sympathy and compassion towards oppressed Europeans, his discontent, hatred, and disgust for the European oppressors, and his fondness and liking for the new American man through his use of diction. ... ” His use of rhetorical questions throughout the first paragraph provoke thought from the Europeans who were responsible for oppressing them. ... ” Through the use of such words as “withered” and “sore affliction,” Crèvocoeur’s malignant feelings towards the European oppressors are displayed, and the harsh reality of the effects these men have on the oppressed are further unveiled.
