Characteristics of Historical Fiction
And Non-Fiction Novels
Thousands of people read ‘history’ everyday, but many cannot differentiate between fiction and non-fiction novels. ... Non-fiction stories relate stories with characters, settings and elements that are factual to history. Historical fiction presents a story that doesn’t conflict with historical records. It portrays realistically, presents authentic settings, historical facts, accurate information through illustrations, and avoids stereotypes and myths. Historical fiction can take you back in time to read of people, places, dates and events that are rooted in our history. Historical fiction and non-fiction have multiple characteristics that authors use as guidelines to write excellent books. Although many books can fit multiple genre categories, most have one clearly identified genre, due to the characteristics laid out. Historical fiction revolves around three main characteristics, which include unobtrusive history, historical references, and having the information biased in representation and coverage. ...
Historical fiction will rarely be found to actually conflict with historical records. ... Unobtrusive history is one of the main characteristics of historical non-fiction. This
essentially means that the novel depends on a reasonably accurate setting, which often
will include actual historical personages, for example, the setting of Havana, Cuba. Coonts runs a parallel with these characteristics by introducing the former American President Dwight Eisenhower, and the Cuban Communist supporter, Fidel Castro, as his actual historical personages. These “characters” carry out actual historical speeches, and deeds, as if the novel were non-fiction, making it difficult to dispute. ... Historical fiction fills the unknown gaps for the reader, such as political problems and history, as well as customs, technology, and state of science during the time period. ... Coonts did an excellent job of weaving fact in with fiction, as he inserts characters, technology, and imagination into his novels to increase awareness of history, in a way that nobody could have imagined. ... Dates and names highlight the important
features, and makes the non-fiction novel more informative than interesting.
