The parents are angry because the doctors gave Lia too much medicine making her sicker and sicker. The doctors are angry because the parents fail to give Lia her prescribed medicine at the proper doses jeopardizing her life. Although both of them want the best for Lia, the lock of communication and cultural misunderstanding escort each blaming the other for worsening Lia’s condition. ... The doctors should communicate clearly to a patient about the cause of an illness and the treatment. The doctors also should be aware the cultural difference in order to reach a compromise on a decision about the treatment.
Doctors need to ask questions to a patient to determine what the patient wants and to make sure that they understand each other. When a patient is a kid, it is particularly important for doctors to ask parents that what they believe the cause of their kid’s illness. Without an understanding regarding the child’s illness between the doctors and the parents, the doctors cannot effectively treat the child even if they have adequate medical skills.
