EVOLUTION OF FICTION
Fiction itself has evolved over the last 200 years from Romanticism to Realism to Naturalism, Modernism, and finally Post Modernism. One aspect of fiction that has changed significantly is the topics of the writings. Each era builds upon the last but always adds a distinctive characteristic along the way. Topics in the Romantic era are characterized by the supernatural and fantastic. Characters in stories display inhuman traits and can perform inhuman tasks. Writers of this era critique the real world through the use of the ideal world. An example of a work displaying these characteristics is “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” Ichibod Crane, the main character is superstitious and irrational. The town of Sleepy Hollow has an overall dreamy feeling.
