Hopefullness in Eudora Welty's A Worn Path
|

|
Eudora Welty presents an endearing theme of hopefulness through her heartwarming short story “A Worn Path”. Phoenix Jackson journeys in to town to obtain medicine that she greatly hopes will help her terminally ill grandson. Along the way she encounters many obstacles she must overcome, including a struggle with her health and senility. Welty demonstrates how hopefulness affects Phoenix to blind her from the truth and to make her determined and selfless. To begin with, Welty shows how Phoenix’s overwhelming hope has blinded her to the truth. The sad fact is that her grandson has swallowed lye and will never get better. Despite this fact, Phoenix’s hope guides her along the same path on a regular basis to obtain his precious medicine. Even though she is told time and time again at the clinic that her grandson “is an obstinate case”, she still does not see the truth (Welty 155).
