Rhetorical Analyses In the speech delivered by Alfred Green, the use of rhetorical strategies such as allusion, diction, language, and organization attempts to persuade the African American population to support the Northern Armies in their cause for Civil War. In the speech delivered on April 1861, Alfred Green uses common and unifying values to gain support for the Civil War, which was caused by the injustices committed by the South by accepting and ordaining slavery. The language used by Green to gain internal appeal refers to the “patriotism (7)” of our forefathers and “the immortal Washington (27).” This use of language and diction shows the important price these founding fathers paid for freedom and liberty. This is appealing and gains support because it is used throughout the entire speech to define the true meaning of patriotism.
