Lord of the Flies Symbols and Archetypes When William Golding wrote the Lord of the Flies, he incorporated a lot of archetypes and symbols. Three of the symbols you can find in this book are initiation, civilization, and law and order. Sam, Eric, Jack and Ralph all had a personal initiation of some sort. The conch represents law and the signal fire represents civilization and rescue. The conch shell is a very strong symbol of law and order and also power.
