Title: “Going to Meet the Man” Author: James Baldwin Date Written:1965 Genre: fiction Setting Date: Post Civil War Locale: South 1. This piece is about a white law enforcer named Jesse and his extreme internal issues dealing with black people. I found that the main character had a childhood memory of his town of white people killing a black man in a very public way, and this led to his issues. I thought that Jesse was quite racist along with the other whites of the community. 2. I can see the large amount of racism in this story as a cultural idea. The south was for slavery even long after the Civil War. People in the south in general tend to be more racist than northerners. This racist view seems to be focused upon in the story. 5. One thing that is mentioned in the “headnotes” is the fact that James Baldwin had to deal with racism while growing up as a black man. His stepfather was racist toward white people. Another point mentioned in the introduction was the tense relationship Baldwin and his stepfather. The whole story focused upon the racism of a white community while an equally important conflict arises. This is the internal conflict of one white man that is revealed toward the end of the story. The internal scars that Jesse must overcome from the gruesome public killing of a black man that his father made him witness. 6. The movement for African American civil rights was mentioned in the period introductions . This is relevant to the story because I think that Baldwin is trying to express just how bad blacks were treated in his time. This story gave the reader a vivid view of the whites state of mind in the south. The period readings also mentioned the south’s racist views. This is more than evident in the story. 10. The in class prompt was the discussion of minorities in America. This piece was focused on the black minority in the south. The story was written by an African American author who was a minority in literary writers. The piece tells of the treatment of the black minority in the south. Title: From The True History of the Conquest of New Spain Author: Bernal Diaz Del Castillo Date written: 1568 Genre: Historical nonfiction Setting date: 1519-1521 Locale: Mexico 1. This piece was about the historical events of Hernan Cortes and his men’s quest to take over Mexico. The story tells of Cortes and his crew’s journey toward conquer as well as their hardships. It also told the gory details of sacrifice of the captured by the Indians. 2. As far as culture goes, the conquistadors had a drive for conquering lands in order to expand Spain. In this story, Diaz was a member of Cortes’s crew who were out to conquer Mexico. The greed of the Spanish is also evident as after the conquer, some soldiers left to go to places with more riches. 3. The writer is highlighting his leader, Cortes. He writes of his own experience as one of the followers of a Spanish conquistador, and the fight for Mexico. 5. The “headnotes” are pretty much a general overview of Diaz’s life. Since the story is an event in the author’s life, the introduction is pretty much an overview of the story. The author is writing of his own experiences, so we see Diaz’s historical accounts compared with his life history. 6. The period introduction talks of Spain’s quest to conquer in the America’s. It talks of the quest for New Spain. This is a prime example of the quest for land in the Americas. Diaz’s account for his journey is proof of that kind of greediness that Spain had for land and riches. Title: Towards a New Consciousness, How to Tame a Wild Tongue, El sonavabitche Author: Gloria Anzaldua Date written: 1987 Genre: fiction Setting Date: Locale: 1. The story Towards a New Consciousness is a difficult piece to read in the sense that there is quite a bit of Spanish mixed in with all the English. It is also broken by poetry which I found to be quite interesting as well as confusing. The story is about hispanics’ hard way of life as they worked in order to survive. The story How to Tame a Wild Tongue is also a piece broken by poetry and filled with Spanish words and phrases that make it confusing. It is about the Hispanic language barrier. The Hispanic people could go to school, but were punished for speaking Spanish or even speaking with a Spanish accent. The term Chicano is used to describe these language diverse people. This story is mainly about the languages of the Chicano people. The poem “El sonavabitche” is a piece of poetry written in the anger of the author. It is about the unfair working conditions of immigrants. It is about an overseer that works immigrants to death and calls the INS before paying them. It is about the fierceness of a female teacher who demands that the overseer give her the wages for these immigrants. This piece is also hard to read because of all the Spanish. One must go from the poem to the footnotes constantly to understand what is going on. 2. In all these stories, the cultural aspect is evident. The Hispanic people and their unfair treatment is the central idea of the stories. The Spanish words throughout the stories signifies a cultural approach.
