Alfredo Garcia 1
Tan, Amy
Prof. ... 24, 2003
In the essay, “Mother Tongue”, by Amy Tan, the author discusses her experiences with different English languages. Tan starts off writes about her dilemmas by talking about her childhood upbringing in a house where Chinese and English were spoken. The issue of her mother’s broken English is brought up, and Tan reflects on how it had an impact on her life and how the discriminations and shame of her mother’s poor English was an embarrassment to her. Growing up as an Asian-American, Tan speaks of the trials it took upon her dealing with the diversity of the Chinese and English accent. ...
Tan’s mother’s intelligence and knowledge of the English language was not reflected in her speech. The fact that her mother would read numerous books and magazines, ranging from Forbes, to The Wall Street Journal was not conveyed through her speech.
