Machieavelli

Machiavelli depicts a brutish yet realistic approach to dealing with war, politics and people; one which our own President of the United States of America should follow. Much of what Machiavelli writes about can be related to our relations with the eastern world. In light of our current war on terrorism it might prove well for our President if he adopted some of Machiavelli’s principles. The president should learn from Machiavelli’s clean-cut reasoning as the dawning of this new form of war settles upon the world. Machiavelli tells us that, “… it is much safer to be feared than to be loved, when one of the two must be lacking.” While to be loved by your followers as well as the rest of the world would be perfect; in short order you may find deserters in your ranks at the first sign of failure. “For one can generally say this about men: that they are ungrateful, fickle, simulators and deceivers, avoiders of danger… … when it [danger] comes nearer to you they turn away”. A state of fear is more reliable and will endure the tests of time, while love must be bought and can be easily lost and turned into a hatred for the leader of a people. (44) Soon after the attacks against the east coast by the terrorists, the president gave a few speeches.
