In an essay called “Mother’s Tongue”, Amy Tan writes about the power of language. When giving a speech to a group of people she realizes that her speech sounds wrong because her mother is in the room. The English that she used with her mother was different than the English she used in speeches. The English she uses with her husband and mother is a language of intimacy, which relates to the language she grew up with.
