“Maus” written by Art Spiegleman is a graphic novel about a father telling his survivor story of the Holocaust to his son. In the beginning of Vladek’s story he reveals how he met and married his wife Anja. Harvey Pekar stated, “I have a feeling based on the information in Maus, …, that Art deliberately tried to make Vladek look bad, …”(par 25). By reading the first chapter of the book, one would think the motive for Vladek marrying Anja would be her extremely wealthy family, but throughout the book he shows that he truly cared for Anja. Vladek shows this love by the encouragement that he gave Anja, the sacrifices that he made for Anja, and the way that he remembers Anja after her death.
