Film versions of Pygmalion.



Pygmalion was written by Bernard Shaw performing for the first time on the 11th of April of 1914 in London. ... Neither the film or the musical were completely loyal to the original play with changes being made in both to suit the circumstances.

I understand two main differences between the tree versions, the endings and the behaviour of Eliza’s father: Mr. ... Changing Doolittle’sattitude isn’t just changing a character but changing Shaw’s critic of his contemporary society, and the endings send the spectator home with a different overall view of the play. The film is much more loyal to the original than the musical which was even renamed My Fair Lady. The differences in time and nature of these two adaptations have a lot to do with this, musicals have like a need of romanticism that Pygmalion lacked which is probably one of the reasons why Shaw was against it.
