Welcome To The University Aligarh : The Town Aligarh is situated at a distance of 130 Kms. South East of Delhi on Delhi-Calcutta Railway and the Grand Trunk Road route. The latitude is 27° 54' N and the longitude is 78° 05' E. The climate is hot and dry in summer and cold and dry in winter with an intervening rainy season. The University campus is 3 kms. away from the main city. The cost of living is not very high. Foreign students may have to spend between Rs. 2500/- and Rs. 3500/- (U.S. $50 to U.S. $70) per month on food and tuition fee. Foreign students are also allowed to stay in private lodgings which are easily available around the campus. The Aligarh Muslim University is a residential academic institution. Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, a great reformer of his age, felt the need for modern education and started a school as far back as 1875 which later became a College known as the Mohammadan Anglo-Oriental College. This College ultimately became in 1920 a University of International repute with a number of modern and traditional faculties. The Aligarh Muslim University has more than 27,000 students on its rolls. It draws students from all corners of the country as well as from foreign countries specially from Africa, West Asia and South East Asia. In some courses seats are reserved for students from SAARC and Commonwealth countries. The University is open to all irrespective of caste, creed, colour or sex. One finds here a perfect balance between tradition and modernity. The range and the quality of its programmes of studies, social life of the campus and other traditional and cultural values make the Aligarh Muslim University a popular choice among students from diverse backgrounds. The twelve faculties of the University, namely, Medicine, Unani Medicine, Engineering & Technology, Science, Life Sciences, Arts, Social Sciences, Commerce, Management Studies & Research, Law, Theology and Agricultural Sciences offer a wide range of subjects and levels of studies from under graduate courses and diplomas to post graduate courses and Ph. D. programmes. There are six colleges : Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Dental College, Zakir Hussain College of Engineering & Technology, Ajmal Khan Tibbiya College, Women's College and Academic Staff College; two polytechnics (Boys/Girls); Institutes, Centres and Centres for Advanced Studies. Besides these higher studies programmes, the University also runs seven schools imparting education upto the Senior Secondary School level. The University offers admission to courses leading to the award of graduate degrees (B.A./B.Sc./B. Com./LL.B. etc.), post-graduate degrees (M.A./M.Sc./M. Com. etc. ), various diplomas and research degrees (M. Phil / Ph.D.). Limited seats are available for foreign students in Engineering, Master of Business Administration and other master level and diploma courses of professional nature. Some prestigious professional courses are offered on merit to Self Financing foreign nationals/non-resident Indians on payment of Institutional Economic Fee in freely convertible currency. Courses available for admission of Foreign Nationals / NRIs are listed on Table - I. With a view to stregthening friendly relations with other countries, these courses are offered by the University to meritorious foreign students/non-resident Indians without admission test and/or interview, if the applicant are sponsored/ nominated by the Government of India as Cultural Exchange Scholars/ or as self financing Foreign Students. Self financing foreign nationals and self financing nonresident Indians can be admitted to these professional courses on payment of Institutional Economic Fee. Residential Facilities Being a residential University the majority of A.M.U.'s students live in hostels. However, due to limited residential facilities, hostel accommodation is not guranteed. Foreign students often prefer to live in private lodgings near the campus which are easily available. The International Students Adviser of the University, can extend help by advising the newly admitted students in finding suitable accommodation. There are fifteen Halls of Residence as under : S.
