The death occurred on 20th April last of Ameen Kasenally, former Ambassador to Pakistan and the People’s Republic of China. He had a distinguished career as teacher then as tutor at the Teachers’ Training College, before joining politics, rather late in life, to fight in the crucial general election of 1967, which sealed the destiny of Mauritius as an independent nation. Kasenally did not get elected, but he was to be appointed Ambassador to Pakistan in 1970, being accredited to China, in 1972. He served for eight years in Islamabad, becoming Dean of the diplomatic corps there. Like the good earth to seedlings and rain clouds to living things, ever dependable, firm in their loyalties, dedicated to the common weal, a few high-minded individuals seem destined to lead, serve and radiate beyond family, village, community and country.
