Napster is software that allows users to share the MP3 libraries, which are spaces on a computer which store music files, with each other no matter where they are located. Napster provides a search capability for songs, chat capability for users to communicate in forums of like interest and an audio player. ... The name stuck and he has been known as napster ever since. Napster has been at the center of much controversy from players involved in the music industry - notably, the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA), and the heavy metal band, Metallica. The issue at hand is Napster Inc. the provider of the service, responsible for the copyright infringements that occur among its users even though Napster itself does not host any of the infringing audio files, most informed Internet speculators believe that whether or not Napster Inc will prevail in the lawsuits, the trend towards digital openness undoubtedly will. ... There, Shawn started work on the Napster software, which he conceived of as a better way than search engines to find MP3 music files. ... In January 1999, with his uncle’s blessing, Shawn dropped out of college to focus on Napster. In May, about a month before Shawn finished a test version of Napster, the elder Fanning incorporated the company. ... While Shawn is the public face of Napster, today he owns less than 10% of the upstart and is not involved in the company’s business decisions. ... In just a few days, 3,000 to 4,000 people downloaded Napster. Now, Shawn’s uncle had proof to back up his hunch about Napster’s power. That summer, John Fanning began to raise Napster’s first round of funding.
